Dynjandi
Dynjandi is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords — a fan of water about 100 metres high that widens as it falls. Below it a series of smaller falls step down towards the fjord, and the path up passes each of them in turn. The name means the thundering one.
I walked all the way up to the main fall, and the climb is part of it rather than something to get through — you pass six smaller waterfalls on the way, each with its own name, and the fjord opens up behind you as you gain height. Do not stop at the bottom for the photograph and drive on. The Westfjords are a long detour from the Ring Road, and this is the thing that justifies it.

Four out of five. The shape is what does it: it spreads as it descends, so it looks less like a drop and more like a slope of moving water. Seen from the fjord road below, it fills the hillside.
Located about 360 kilometers from Reykjavík in the Westfjords, Dynjandi is reached via Route 60 and a short gravel road leading to a parking area. The main waterfall is a 15-minute uphill hike from the lot, crossing several smaller falls along the way. The trail involves some elevation gain and rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear is advised.
Parking at Dynjandi costs approximately 750 ISK ( approx. 6 Euro/ USD), payable via an app.
Due to its remote location, Dynjandi is far less crowded than waterfalls along Iceland’s Ring Road, offering a peaceful and immersive nature experience even during peak travel seasons.
