Eldhraun Lava Field

Eldhraun is one of the most massive lava fields on Earth, covering 565 square kilometers. Formed during the catastrophic Laki eruption in the 1780s, it has since been blanketed by a thick, vibrant layer of green moss, creating an otherworldly, soft landscape. This terrain is so unique that Apollo astronauts once used it as a moon-like training ground. When driving the Ring Road between Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur, you’ll find designated pull-offs to admire this expanse. Important: Please never walk on the moss, as it is incredibly fragile and takes decades to regrow

(Back to Overview)

Eldhraun offers a mesmerizing view of endless moss-covered lava formations that seem soft and plush but conceal jagged volcanic rock beneath. The field’s immense scale and vibrant green color, especially under Iceland’s shifting weather and light, make it a striking natural spectacle.

The lava field is easily visible from the Ring Road, with parking areas where visitors can stop to admire and photograph the landscape safely. There are no formal trails across the lava itself, as walking on the moss is prohibited to prevent damage.

Parking at Eldhraun Lava Field is free, allowing visitors to explore the viewpoints and enjoy the scenery without any admission or parking fees.

Eldhraun is a popular stop for travelers on the South Coast but tends to be less crowded than nearby famous sites. Its expansive size ensures space for visitors to take in the wide-open landscape comfortably.
