Gljúfrabú

Gljúfrabúi, the 'Canyon Dweller,' is a hidden gem tucked away just a short walk from its famous neighbor, Seljalandsfoss. Unlike the open cascades nearby, this 20-meter waterfall is partially concealed inside a narrow rock fissure. To see it, you must wade through a shallow stream or hop across stones into a moss-covered gorge, where the water thunders down into an intimate, ethereal cavern. It’s a mystical experience that feels far more secretive and serene than the more crowded landmarks along the Ring Road.

My rating

Scenic Beauty

Gljúfrabúi enchants with its hidden placement inside a narrow canyon, offering dramatic views framed by mossy cliffs and sparkling water spray.

Accessibility

Located just a few minutes’ walk north of Seljalandsfoss parking area, the entrance to Gljúfrabúi requires a short hike into the canyon via rocky paths, which can be muddy or slippery. Proper footwear is recommended.

Cost

Parking at Seljalandsfoss costs around 1.000 ISK (approx. 8 EUR / USD), with no additional fees for visiting Gljúfrabúi.

Crowd level

Due to its concealed location and slightly challenging access, Gljúfrabúi attracts fewer tourists than nearby Seljalandsfoss, creating a more peaceful experience for visitors.
