Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss is South Iceland’s best-kept secret. Hidden in a lush, emerald-green gorge just a stone's throw from the mighty Skógafoss, this 30-meter beauty offers a serene escape from the crowds. Its name, meaning 'Dweller in the Gorge,' perfectly describes its sheltered location within the Kvernugil canyon. The true highlight? Much like Seljalandsfoss, you can walk directly behind the cascading curtain of water, feeling the raw power of nature while looking out through the mist at the moss-covered basalt walls. It’s a magical, intimate experience that feels like stepping into a hidden fairytale world.

My rating

Scenic Beauty

Kvernufoss enchants with its elegant fall inside a narrow, moss-covered gorge framed by volcanic rock, offering a serene, photogenic setting.

Accessibility

The waterfall is a short, easy hike from the Skógar Museum parking lot—about 20 to 30 minutes each way—with a clearly marked trail leading through rolling hills and along the river to the gorge.

Cost

Parking at the Skógar Museum involves a fee of 836 ISK (around 6 EUR / USD), while visiting Kvernufoss itself is free of charge.

Crowd level

Due to its hidden location and relative obscurity compared to Skógafoss, Kvernufoss sees fewer visitors, providing a peaceful experience even in the high tourist season.
